No, Women Who Cut Out Carbohydrates CAN’T Lose Their Memory. It’s Just Another Bad Study

No matter how many studies (and millions of dieters) have demonstrated the effectiveness and safety of Atkins-type diets, doctors will never stop trying to disprove the obvious. This bogus study, for example, claims to demonstrate that “dieters who avoid starchy foods do worse in mental tests than those who are allowed some pasta, bread and potatoes.”

The problem is that they tested the women just one week after switching them to a low-carb diet. What kind of scientists don’t know that is takes several weeks for the body to transition from a carb-fueled metabolism to a fat-fueled one? After the transition, the brain starts working on ketone bodies (by-products of fat breakdown for energy) instead of glucose, and it actually works 25% more efficiently on them (as does the heart). Before this happens, though, you feel a lack of energy because your body, including the brain, doesn’t get enough of the fuel to which it is used. This is basic biochemistry, but judging by the quotations in the article, the researchers believe (or want the public to believe) that the brain can only work on glucose.

The article says that the study tracked participants for three weeks. Even if they tested them at the end of week 3, it still demonstrates (let alone proves) nothing.

And no, contrary to the lies so successfully spread by animal rights fanatics, Dr. Atkins didn’t have heart disease and was not clinically (or un-clinically) obese.
