Putin May Be Back As President of Russia Sooner Than We Thought

A Russian newspaper, writes the New Yourk Times,

reported that Mr. Putin intentionally placed Mr. Medvedev in the presidency “to carry out the necessary constitutional changes and unpopular reforms for Putin to then return to the Kremlin for longer.” The newspaper theorized that Mr. Medvedev would resign and call for a presidential election in 2009.

And his new two terms will be six years each instead of four. Neat trick.

Russia is a country where, if you get into power, you can stay there for as long as you want. It has always been the case; now you just have to be a little more creative and jump through a few hoops because it has to look legitimate to the West, but for someone with solid KGB training these hoops must seem pretty wide and low-hanging.
