British Cabinet Minister: Maybe We Need Fewer Politicians Who Never Had an Honest Job in Their Lives
A good idea, but how does she want to achieve it?
She called on political parties and trade unions to actively recruit more politicians from the working and middle-classes – echoing the way they have increased the number of women and ethnic minorities in Parliament.
The parties won’t do anything unless they have to or it will give them an advantage. Women and minorities have been successful in this because they have loud lobbies, and some of these “ethnic” minorities are so scary to civilized people that they’re given anything they want. Regular working folks aren’t that lucky.
So, how about requiring by law that a candidate for public office have ten years of private-sector experience? Do you think Parliament in London will pass it?
What else is disturbing is how many people become advisers, staffers, etc. to cabinet ministers and party bosses after having been employed only in politics - or even as their first job, right out of Oxford. And Britain is hardly unique in this respect.
