What Would You Be Doing If You Were One of the People Joe Biden Says Are Going to Test Obama?
Imagine that you are running a country that exists to sell oil and annoy the rest of the world. Say, Russia, or Iran, or Venezuela. Let’s say you are Vladimir Putin, for the sake of name recognition. A couple short months ago, you were selling the only thing your country has to offer at $150 per barrel. You had more money than you knew what to do with. You were modernizing your military, stashing tens of billions of dollars in your personal Swiss accounts, and could afford a small victorious war when you needed one.
Then, right when you think you’ve finally got enough income to start a new cold war that you’ve always dreamed of winning, the black stuff drops to $70 per barrel. You surely aren’t going to fund all these little projects from your own Swiss accounts, right? So, what do you do?
If you are smart (and you are – you’re Vlad Putin, remember?), you’re creating an International Crisis Research Group right about now. You’re putting together the country’s best minds who haven’t yet fled to work for Google, and aren’t letting them go to the bathroom until they give you “at least four or five scenarios” for how you could stir some trouble to give the oil prices a push.
And if you regret not cutting off that pipeline in Georgia when you had the chance, you needn’t worry, because a U.S. vice-presidential candidate says you’ll be getting a second chance soon.
