A Mid-Engined 4-Door Exotic – Is That Too Much to Ask?

A Porsche sedan, a Lamborghini concept sedan – why did they make them front-engined? Even when Ferrari toyed with the idea, it was the same deal. How is this better than a Mercedes CLS? What’s exciting about it?

Look, guys, you make fabulous mid- and rear-engined sports cars – so give us a mid-engined 4-door super-sedan to dream about! Don’t you want your product to stand out?

Go ahead and make the wheelbase as long as it needs to be to accommodate two rows of posh seating and a big V-12. Or make it cab-forward or something – just like your sports cars. Or mount the engine transversely. Sure, the trunk will be small if it has to fit between the front wheel housings, especially if there’s all-wheel drive, but are you really going to sell a car like that on a big trunk? And you can add a second one in the back if you really think you need to.

Oh yeah, and if you’re making a Porsche 4-door, don’t make it a hatchback. Ford makes hatchbacks.

Heck, Peugeot makes hatchbacks, too, but even they got it right with the 908 RC concept. Here it is, transverse mid-mounted V-12 (a turbo diesel from the Le Mans racer), two trunks and all:
